North Oregon Coast – A Perfect Vacation Destination

The spectacular North Oregon Coast offers miles of breathtaking views, outdoor recreation, sightseeing and adventures – from visiting museums and lighthouses to exploring nature trails, beaches and dunes. The North Oregon coast has a number of idyllic vacation areas with rivers, lakes, trails, sand dunes, and amazing state parks to visit. The coastal terrain is a beautiful combination of sandy beaches and towering rock cliffs.

North Oregon Coast – Astoria
Starting at the northernmost point, the City of Astoria– the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, is situated on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River. The city is nestled on steep hillsides overlooking the Columbia River, and is a short distance from the Pacific Ocean. From the waterfront, you may visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum, which features a lightship or cross the 4-mile-long Astoria-Megler Bridge to Washington. The 125-foot Astoria Column, painted with scenes of Astoria's history, offers breathtaking panoramic views. Travel seven miles south to see the log stockade where Lewis and Clark spent the long, rainy winter of 1805-06 at Fort Clatsop, now a national memorial. Fort Stevens State Park, which once guarded the mouth of the Columbia from the Civil War until the end of World War II, features miles of pristine ocean beaches, the wreck of the "Peter Iredale", freshwater lakes, picnic facilities, nature trails, boating, camping, biking, horseback riding, and swimming. With a thriving artist community, Astoria offers wonderful art galleries, boutiques and music venues.

North Oregon Coast – Seaside
The closest major coastal city to the Portland area, Seaside is a very popular destination with terrific beaches, attractions and exciting events throughout the year. Kids love the Seaside Aquarium, and parents will love visiting Ecola State Park for a picnic, some photos, and a scenic walk or hike. Visit Seaside during the summer and attend the beach volleyball tournament or the famous Hood-to-Coast Relay. During the winter, enjoy a more quiet atmosphere, beautiful beaches, glorious sunsets and historic sites.

North Oregon Coast - Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach was ranked number seven of the "World's Best Beaches" by the Travel Channel. This magnificent setting offers a variety of vacation fun along the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The entire town lies parallel to a scenic beach that features the famous Haystack Rock - one of the largest monoliths in the world. The marine life in the tidepools at the base of the Rock is protected, but the Haystack Rock Awareness Program gives classes at the Rock to enhance your enjoyment of sea life. Cannon Beach is also home to Ecola State Park, one of the most beautiful scenes in all of Oregon. From Ecola State Park you can view Oregon's Coast as far as the eye can see. You also have a terrific vantage point on the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, located one mile out to sea. While in town, visit the Coaster Theater Playhouse for a live play, enjoy a bounty of art galleries and upscale boutiques, and experience fine dining and fresh seafood.

Between the resort town of Seaside and the smaller Cannon Beach is Tillamook Head with Ecola State Park at its crest, offering picnic spots, viewpoints and trails. South of Cannon Beach, Oswald West State Park has 12 miles of the ever-beautiful Oregon Coast Trail, Neahkahnie Mountain and a hike-in campground.

Oregon North Coast Beaches
The beaches of Warrenton, Gearhart, Seaside and Cannon Beach offer treasures to the careful beachcomber, and the rewards are greatest just after a blustery North Coast storm. Popular beach activities include walking, kite flying and, when the tide and season are right, clamming. The Pacific Ocean is too cold on Oregon’s North Coast for most swimmers and there are dangerous currents. There are public swimming pools in Astoria and Seaside. For those willing to brave the cold waters, surfing, windsurfing, boogie boarding and skim-boarding all are permitted.
